On a windy Wednesday in Cape Town, photographer Andiswa Mkosi left the office to attend what would be her first musical event for 2016. Lucky for her and many artists and jazz aficionados in Cape Town, she was treated to a free concert at Church Square by the legendary pianist and composer, Abdullah Ibrahim.
The silence and level of focus present at Church Square was the first thing that stood out on her arrival. Spectators around the musical legend donned smiles of bliss on their faces, some with eyes closed taking it all in – as if Ibrahim was preaching with his finger tips on the shiny brown piano. A short 45 minute ‘sermon’ that will remain etched in their memories.
Ibrahim’s impromptu concert was reportedly a part of a shoot for a biopic on the pianist, produced by Ian Henderson of Think Film.
